Can I get my document witnessed?
No. David provides his legal services remotely and does not provide a document witnessing service.
If you simply need a signature witnessed, a local solicitor may be able to provide this as a standalone service.
If the document relates to a corporate transaction on which David is advising you, however, he can explain the signing requirements and how the document needs to be executed.
How much will it cost?
The cost depends upon the type and complexity of the work.
As a guide, David’s principal areas of work include shareholder agreements, share reorganisations and the sale and purchase of private companies. Guide prices for these services are available on the Prices page.
Once you have explained what you need, David can normally give you an indication of the likely cost and, where appropriate, agree a fixed fee. David will probably ask to see a heads of terms document for your intended business sale/purchase or shareholder agreement.
You will not be charged simply for making an initial enquiry and explaining the work you require. David will discuss the proposed scope of work and fees with you before you decide whether to instruct him.
There will therefore be no surprise invoice simply because you have contacted David to discuss a potential matter!
David acts for businesses of different sizes, from individual entrepreneurs and owner-managed companies to larger businesses, and the scope of the work can be tailored accordingly.
How do I get started?
The easiest way is to text or WhatsApp David Hughes on 07701 027881 or email david@hughespost.co.uk with a brief description of what you need help with.
For example, if you are selling a company, it is helpful to say that you are considering or have agreed a sale, approximately what the company does and whether heads of terms have already been agreed.
For a shareholder agreement, briefly explain who the shareholders are, their respective shareholdings and what you are trying to achieve.
For a share reorganisation, explain the current share structure and how you would like it to change.
David can then let you know what further information is needed and discuss the next steps with you.
Do we need to meet?
No. Most corporate legal work can be carried out without an in-person meeting. Therefore David can help you no matter where in the country you are located.
David works remotely and normally communicates with clients by telephone, email, Teams or Zoom.
Documents can usually be circulated, reviewed and signed electronically, although the appropriate signing procedure will depend upon the particular document.
This means David can advise clients throughout England and Wales rather than being restricted to businesses close to his Hertfordshire base.
Do you provide any other kinds of legal services?
David concentrates on corporate and commercial law, with particular experience in:
buying and selling private companies;
shareholder agreements; and
share reorganisations.
He can also advise on related company and commercial law issues arising during the life of a limited company.
David does not attempt to cover every area of law. If your matter requires specialist advice outside his area of practice, he will tell you and may be able to recommend another solicitor or professional from his network.
This can be particularly useful on a business sale or purchase, where specialist advice may sometimes be required on matters such as employment, property, pensions or tax alongside the principal corporate transaction.
Can I get Legal Aid?
No. David provides corporate and commercial legal services to businesses, shareholders and business owners. This work does not qualify for Legal Aid funding.
David will, however, discuss the proposed scope and cost of the work with you before you decide whether to instruct him.

Is the service confidential?
Yes.
Communications between a solicitor and a prospective client are treated confidentially. This applies to an initial enquiry even if you subsequently decide not to instruct David.
You can therefore provide enough information about your proposed transaction or legal issue for David to understand what you need help with.

If David is in a meeting or working on a transaction, a message is usually easier to respond to than an unexpected telephone call.
If the question needs more than a quick answer, David can arrange a telephone or video call with you.
If you are not already a client, there is no charge simply for sending an initial message explaining what you need help with.
Do I have to live in your area to get advice from you?
No.
David is based in Hertfordshire and has particular connections with Hemel Hempstead, St Albans and the surrounding area, but clients do not need to live or work locally.
Corporate legal work is particularly well suited to working remotely. David advises clients by telephone, email and video call and can provide legal services to businesses and individuals throughout England and Wales.
Can I come and see you for an appointment?
No. David’s service is provided remotely rather than through traditional office appointments.
Meetings can be arranged by Microsoft Teams or Zoom, with other communication taking place by telephone, email, text or WhatsApp as appropriate.
For corporate transactions this generally works very well. Draft agreements and other documents can be circulated electronically and discussed by telephone or video call without the time and inconvenience of travelling to a solicitor’s office.
